Artist Statement

Themes of faith, family, and colorism are prominent in my work. I want to confront colorism and featurism in the black community. As a teacher, it hurts my ears to hear black kids make fun of each other because of Eurocentric beauty standards. I want black children to enjoy the way God made them and to proudly identify with and appreciate who they are.

Due to the power of images, I hope that when people see my work, which also depicts joyful, healthy family connections, they will start to clearly perceive themselves in this same light and pursue and develop strong, loving relationships via marriage, parenthood, and friendship.
